Using this Handbook

This handbook has been developed for managers and staff working at all levels in care homes, supported living or domiciliary care services.

It provides a range of guidance which will support the service and individuals to meet regulatory responsibilities and provide the best care and support possible.

Unless specified otherwise, all the guidance in the handbook applies to everyone.

Throughout the Handbook, the term 'registered person' is used. The registered person is the person registered with the Care Quality Commission as either the registered manager (care homes) or the registered provider (other service types). This is in line with the terminology used by the CQC.

This Handbook is fully functioning across a range of devices and browsers. This includes:

  • Desktops;
  • Laptops;
  • Tablets;
  • Smartphones (may not comply with older smartphone technology);
  • Internet Explorer (Windows 7, 8 and 8.1);
  • Microsoft Edge (Windows 10);
  • Google Chrome;
  • Mozilla Firefox;
  • Apple Safari.

In order to make this Handbook as accessible as possible, you can also change the size of the text/layout using the accessibility functions of your device.

Glossary

There is a large glossary of terms (Keywords). This includes social care, health, and legal terms. This is accessible from the top navigation bar: Adult Glossary.

Other tools

The Handbook contains the following additional tri.x tools. These will support you to understand the requirements of key legislation and how to implement them into the care and support you provide:

This Handbook contains a local resource section which can be accessed via the navigation bar or Local Resources button. This is an electronic documents library that is populated and maintained locally.

The library is structured around key headings. Clicking on the heading will reveal the list of relevant documents available. Clicking on the document will enable access to it.

If there is a local resource that you think should be added talk to your line manager in the first instance.

A system administrator is a person (or persons) whose role is to manage the local resource area. This includes structuring the sections, adding resources and deleting resources.

Before undertaking any action on the local resource area, the system administrator/s must be assured that:

  • Any new resource has received the required local sign-off;
  • The resource is not in draft form;
  • The resource is in the correct format (PDF if not designed to be edited);
  • The resource is legally sound and reflective of local requirements;
  • The resource does not breach any copyright;
  • The resource is not in breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 or the UK GDPR;
  • Any online resource links are working and secure.

Legal advice should be sought as necessary.

It is important to note that tri.x have no responsibility for the above and do not review the content of the local resource area. This includes any resources added by tri.x on your behalf.

It is also important to note that tri.x do not hold any data about the date upon which a local resource is added, updated, removed etc. Nor is an archive of the local resource area kept. We recommend that you keep a local record of this information, should you ever require it in the future.

Every effort has been taken to ensure regulatory compliance. If you discover any errors or mistakes, please alert your line manager or the registered person.

tri.x is committed to ensuring its platform is accessible to all users and has embedded accessibility into its design, development, and testing processes. The platform is currently partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA, meaning most content meets accessibility requirements, with ongoing improvements to areas such as form behaviour, colour contrast, control sizing & responsiveness.

Accessibility is regularly reviewed through internal assessments, automated testing tools, audits, and user feedback, with amendments evaluated on each release. tri.x supports modern browsers and assistive technologies and now includes a text-to-speech feature to further support users with visual impairments. Users are encouraged to report any accessibility issues so they can be triaged and addressed in future releases.

For more information please see: Accessibility Statement for tri.x online.

Text-to-Speech allows users to listen to manual content instead of, or alongside, reading it.

A play icon appears next to the supported section headings. Selecting the icon will read the content of that section aloud.

Google Translate is an online translation tool that enables users to translate text, documents, and websites into a wide range of languages. It is provided for general assistance when accessing information written in another language and can be found at the bottom of every page on this site. This tool is useful for gaining a general understanding of foreign‑language content, but translations should be reviewed for accuracy if being used in formal or official communications.

If you have any comments or suggestions to make about this Handbook, please consult your line manager or the registered person.

The content of this website can be accessed, printed and downloaded in an unaltered form, on a temporary basis, for personal study or reference purposes. However, any content printed or downloaded may not be sold, licensed, transferred, copied, or reproduced in whole or in part in any manner or in or on any media to any person without the prior written consent of tri.x.

The Handbook should normally be viewed online but can be printed, for reference only, using the keyboard shortcut 'ctrl + p'.

Please note, the Handbook will be updated from time to time, so you should avoid retaining printed versions - hard copies are only valid for 72 hours.
